Sight Seen : Australian Delights - Australian Museum

Sydney - Australian Museum

Under an ongoing process of modernisation, this museum, established just 40 years after the First Fleet dropped anchor, is doing a brilliant job of it. A standout is the Indigenous Australians section, covering Aboriginal history and spirituality, from Dreaming stories to videos of the Freedom Rides of the 1960s. The stuffed animal gallery of the natural history section manages to keep it relevant, while the excellent dinosaur gallery features the enormous Jobaria as well as local bruisers like Muttaburrasaurus.

There are also interesting displays on extinct megafauna (giant wombats – simultaneously cuddly and terrifying), current Australian creatures, a kids section and more. We're looking forward to the new Long Gallery exhibition, due to open in October 2017, focusing on 100 objects and 100 key people from Australia's past, and new Oceania galleries that will incorporate the colourful Pacific Island collection.

Don't miss heading up to the cafe, which has brilliant views of St Mary's Cathedral and down to Woolloomooloo.
